Lancaster County Food Festival

Held at the 1719 Hans Herr House, the festival celebrated Lancaster County's cultural diversity with food, music, games and crafts—and it raised funds to construct a replica Native American longhouse, typical of those used in the area for hundreds of years before Europeans arrived.

Mennonites, historians and bibliophiles gathered at Christian Aid Ministries in Ephrata to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the "Martyrs Mirror", a Dutch book that has served as a devotional text for Amish and Mennonites. The first German edition of the book was published in 1748-49 at the Ephrata Cloister.

Festival of Roots and Music

January 31, 2010

The Festival began with an outstanding bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace" by Tom Miller. The Scots Irish were some of the first settlers to arrive in Lancaster County after the Mennonites 300 years ago.
An overflow crowd of 1,000 attended the "Festival of Roots and Music" on Sunday afternoon, January 31, at Strasburg Mennonite Church, which sits on part of the original 10,000 acres deeded from William Penn to a number of Mennonite families in 1710.
Well-known community leader Ted Darcus (left), who presented the African American "Historical Moment," joins the congregation in singing "Precious Lord, Take My Hand," along with Narrators TV anchor Kim Lemon and Lancaster Council of Churches leader Rev. Scott Fischer, and song leader Merle Good.
Father Alexander Veronis shares a humorous anecdote in his "Historical Moment" about the Greek Orthodox congregation.
Well-known local soloists, Jeryl Metzler and Amy Yovanovich, graced the Festival with several numbers. Here they sing a duet together.
The four choirs joined together for the final number, "Be Still, My Soul." Here a cross-section of the Ephrata Cloister Chorus, the group VIVE from the Hispanic United Methodist Church, the choir from the Vietnamese Alliance Church, and the Old Order River Brethren ensemble participate.
