Each year, the Society offers four "quarterly meetings"—free, public presentations on timely topics related to Pennsylvania German and Mennonite history and culture.

2012 Meetings

  • A Brief History of the Victim/Offender and Restorative Justice Movements
    Monday, February 27, 7:00 PM
    Strasburg Mennonite Church

Learn from two pioneers in the growing field of restorative justice, a response to criminal justice that focuses on repairing harm rather than establishing deterrence. Howard Zehr is Professor of Restorative Justice at Eastern Mennonite University; Lorraine Stutzman Amstutz is Restorative Justice Coordinator at Mennonite Central Committee U.S.

  • Music in Worship Among Five Anabaptist Groups
    Monday, May 7, 7:00 PM
    Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center

Learn from the distinct musical traditions of members of Old Order Amish, Old Order River Brethren and Weaverland, Groffdale and Lancaster Mennonite Conferences.

  • Storytelling Night
    Monday, September 10, 7:00 PM
    Forest Hills Mennonite Church

Hear life-shaping stories from two exceptional people: Arli Klassen, executive director of Mennonite Central Committee, and Richard Showalter, former president of Eastern Mennonite Missions, tell formative stories from their childhood, life and work.

  • Christianity and the Native American Religious Experience
    Monday, November 12, 7:00 PM
    Landisville Mennonite Church

Linford Fisher is Assistant Professor of History at Brown University. His current book project, The Indian Great Awakening: Religion and the Shaping of Native Cultures in Early America (under contract with Oxford), looks at Native American communities in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Long Island (NY), over the course of the 18th century, particularly with regard to their involvement in the "Great Awakening" of the 1740s.

In addition, author and activist Ron Sider will discuss the topic of his new book, The Early Church on Killing, at the Society's annual banquet.
